Chad: Travel Health Information

Chad is known for its natural landscapes, wildlife, and diverse tribal cultures. The country is home to some of Africa’s most iconic species, including lions, giraffes, elephants and more.

Healthcare

The standards for patient care and medical services in Chad may differ from your home country. Chad has both public and private healthcare options. Healthcare is also provided by humanitarian aid organizations. The quality of care is below international standards due in part to shortages of healthcare personnel and limited and out-of-date medical equipment. Healthcare outside of N’Djamena is extremely limited.

In the event of a medical emergency, contact your travel health insurance company immediately. Hospitals and private practitioners in Chad require upfront payment, regardless if you have travel health insurance. Evacuation – commonly to Western Europe – will be required for medical emergencies. Ensure that you have accessible funds to cover upfront fees and adequate travel health insurance, including evacuation. Before you depart, check with your insurer about the extent of their coverage in Chad.

Pharmacies and medications

Pharmacy access is limited outside of N’Djamena. Medicines may be in extremely short supply, and fake and counterfeit medications are also common. Make sure to pack an adequate supply of essential medication for the duration of your trip.

If you are travelling with medication, check with Chad’s embassy, consulate, or Ministry of Health for details on medication allowances and restrictions. If your medication is a psychotropic or narcotic, you can review Chad’s regulations on the International Narcotics Control Board. Note that these sources may provide incomplete or out-of-date information.

Road safety

Many roads in Chad are in poor condition. Major roads in the capital city N'Djamena are paved but may not be well maintained. Travelling by car may also be dangerous and is not advised.
