Latvia: Travel Health Information

Latvia is known for its cultural history and natural landscapes. Visitors can enjoy the beaches of Jurmala, a stroll through baroque town of Kuldiga, and Gauja National Park – home to medieval castles and numerous hiking trails.

Healthcare

The standards for patient care and medical services in Latvia may differ from your home country. Latvia has public and private health sectors. Private facilities in major cities typically meet international standards but care can be limited throughout the rest of the country, particularly in rural regions. Reports of long wait times for some healthcare services are common and shortages of medical equipment can occur.

In the event of a medical emergency, contact your travel health insurance company immediately. Hospitals in Latvia typically require upfront payment, regardless if you have travel health insurance. Evacuation to Western Europe may be required for complex medical emergencies. Ensure that you have accessible funds to cover upfront fees and adequate travel health insurance, including evacuation. Before you depart, check with your insurer about the extent of their coverage in Latvia.

Pharmacies and medications

Pharmacies are available in urban areas, but access in rural regions may be limited. Prescriptions for medications must be obtained from a doctor and medicines and other health-related products cannot be purchased outside of pharmacies. Latvia also has one online pharmacy. Pharmacists are trained and licensed.

If you are travelling with medication, check with Latvia’s embassy, consulate, or Ministry of Health for details on medication allowances and restrictions. If your medication is a psychotropic or narcotic, you can review Latvia’s regulations on the International Narcotics Control Board. Road safety

Roads in Latvia are generally well maintained in urban areas, but road quality may differ by region. Latvia reports high incidences of road accident deaths, so precautions should be taken while driving. Seat belts must be worn by all passengers in vehicles at all times. Helmets must be worn by motorcycle drivers and passengers and for cyclists under the age of 12. All cyclists should wear a helmet for safety.
