Ukraine: Travel Health Information

Ukraine is known for its diverse cities, architecture, and impressive landscapes such as the Carpathian Mountains. Visitors can explore Kiev’s Soviet-style architecture and ancient churches, the classic European buildings of Lviv, and the medieval architecture of Chenihiv.

Healthcare

The standards for patient care and medical services in Ukraine may differ from your home country. Ukraine has a public healthcare system and a small private sector. The country’s healthcare system has not been reformed since it was part of the former Soviet Union and as a result, the quality of care typically does not meet international standards. Medical equipment and supplies are often limited and there is a shortage of trained doctors.

In the event of a medical emergency, contact your travel health insurance company immediately. Hospitals in Ukraine typically require upfront payment, regardless if you have travel health insurance. Serious medical emergencies may require evacuation to Western Europe. Ensure that you have accessible funds to cover upfront fees and adequate travel health insurance, including evacuation. Before you depart, check with your insurer about the extent of their coverage in Ukraine.

Pharmacies and medications

Pharmacies are typically privately owned and medicines are often paid for out-of-pocket. Many medicines that may require a prescription in your home country can be purchased over-the-counter in Ukraine. However, always consult a doctor before taking prescription medication.

If you are travelling with medication, check with Ukraine’s embassy, consulate, or Ministry of Health for details on medication allowances and restrictions. If your medication is a psychotropic or narcotic, you can review Ukraine’s regulations on the International Narcotics Control Board. Note that these sources may provide incomplete or out-of-date information.

Road safety

Roads in cities are generally well maintained, but can vary by region and may be poor in rural areas. Seat belts must be worn by the driver and front seat passengers of vehicles, however all passengers should wear their seat belt at all times. Helmets are mandatory for motorcycle drivers and passengers.
